Thailand by sailboat or catamaran

Guide to the most beautiful islands in the Thai archipelago

It is hard to find a destination as idyllic as Thailand. Whether it is the landscape, the climate or the seabed, Thailand is the ideal destination for a sailing vacation

Sailors or those wishing to book a sailing or catamaran vacation in Thailand should consider the country divided into two zones: the Gulf of Siam (or Gulf of Thailand) and the Andaman Sea. In the eastern part of the Gulf are the islands of Koh Chang, Koh Samet, Koh Sichang, and cities such as Chanthaburi or Pattaya; in the western part, on the other hand, are the trio of islands Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan, and Ko Tao. To go from one side of the gulf to the other is 190 nautical miles.

The Andaman Sea, in contrast, is busier and a popular destination for boaters. An extraordinary opportunity to sail in mythical, deeply exotic places with unspoiled nature and an almost enchanted atmosphere. The embarkation point is almost always Phuket, followed by the Krabi area with the islands of Koh Phi Phi and Phang Nga. This area is famous for the beautiful limestone formations that rise high from the sea, creating a unique panorama and an unparalleled variety of islands. To the north of Phuket are the Similan and Surin islands, and to the south many others including Koh Lanta, Koh Muk, and Koh Rok.

Thailand is known for its wild jungle beaches, temples, affordable prices, food and the friendliness of its people that has given it the name "Country of Smiles." Without a doubt, a skippered sailing vacation in Thailand will not leave you indifferent.

The best time of year

Although most sailors prefer to sail in Thailand in the dry season, November to April, it is possible to sail in these beautiful places all year round. Exceptions are September and October where seasonal rains are concentrated. The climate is tropical, with a temperature between 27 and 29 degrees.

First time on a boat

First time on a boat

Thailand is a suitable destination for novice sailors; what you need to consider is the time of year you choose to go. The dry season with light and steady winds, dry and sunny weather offers the best sailing conditions for less experienced sailors. The rainy season, on the other hand, is suitable for experienced sailors. In fact, this period tends to be very windy. The most frequent rains do not last long: it usually rains for an hour or two in the afternoon or early evening.

Practical Info

Geography

Thailand is located in Southeast Asia and lies entirely between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator. The terrain is quite varied between mountainous and more populated lowland areas. The country has over 3,000 kilometers of coastline and 1,430 islands, scattered between the Andaman Sea in the west and the Gulf of Siam in the east.

Getting there

The country has a few international airports in Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai but only in the capital city do direct flights from most european city operated by Thai Airways. Alternatively, you can opt for a European or non-European stopover flight.

Getting around

The major means of getting around on the islands are cabs and tuk-tuks, which being in a tourist area are really expensive compared to the capital Bangkok. The best way to move from one island to another can only be by sailboat or catamaran.

Climate

In general, Thailand's climate is tropical monsoon and is characterized by two main seasons. The dry season, November to April, when there are more hours of sunshine, low rainfall and low humidity. The rainy season, from May to October, although temperatures still remain warm, the days are marked by persistent rains, which, however, are not comparable to the storms of Southeast Asia. The Gulf of Thailand area is an exception to this pattern. In fact, it is the only area in the country with a unique microclimate that makes the islands hospitable year-round.

Winds

The northeast monsoon, coming from inland areas of the continent, blows in winter from November to February. However, the cool weather is felt in the north and inland areas, while on the coast and in the south it is warm and little wind is felt. The southwest monsoon, on the other hand, blows from mid-May to October and brings the rainy season.

Ports and marinas

On Phuket Island there are four well-stocked marinas. On the Phi Phi islands there are no harbors, but several bays suitable for anchoring. In the Thai Gulf area, more or less well-stocked harbors can be found on the larger islands of Koh Samui and Koh Chang; on the other smaller, wilder islands there are anchorage points in the roadstead.

Costs

A boating vacation in this area requires at least a week to ten days. You will find experiences starting from 1200 euros per person. The price may vary depending on the period, the boat and the service offered.

Thailand: in which areas to navigate

Phuket

Phuket

This is the largest island in Thailand and often used as a base for sailing vacations in the Andaman Sea. Before or after the boating experience, it is recommended to carve out time to visit Phuket town, the largest and probably the most fun of all the Thai islands. In addition to a wide range of entertainment options, it offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the entire country. These include Freedom Beach, quiet and secluded, more worldly Surin Beach, and Kata Noi, a green beach with crystal clear waters. By boat you can reach Banana Rock Beach, a hidden and little-visited gem. Also worth a visit is the Old Town, a network of streets adorned with old mansions and colorful colonial-style houses. Other excursions not to be missed are a visit to the Big Buddha and Cape Promthep, the most famous and romantic viewpoint on the entire island.

Krabi

Krabi

The west coast of southern Thailand is home to Krabi Province, which includes more than 100 islands with sheer cliffs, beaches of rare beauty, and mangrove forests. Near Krabi Town is Hat Noppharat Thara Marine Park, which is home to protected species of sharks and dolphins.

Also very fascinating is the Buddhist temple Wat Tham Sua, known as "Tiger Cave." This religious site includes a staircase with over a thousand steps at the top of which you can admire a large golden Buddha and see the whole city from above. More adventurous hikers can explore the forests of Khao Sok National Park, one of the oldest in the world.

Among the beaches, the most beautiful is Ao Nang Bay, a bay lined with resorts, stores, restaurants, and clubs. Slightly further south and accessible only by boat is the famous Railay Beach, protected by rock walls and ideal for diving and snorkeling.

Phi Phi Island

Phi Phi Island

Phi Phi islands are one of the most popular destinations in all of Thailand. Two spectacular islands in an archipelago consisting of 6 islets, of which only Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Leh turn out to be inhabited.

The first, the largest, is the island on which sailors disembark and actually consists of two islands connected by a small strip of sand. Two hills thus turn out to be separated by a double bay where shelter can be found during the passage of the monsoons. The land between the two bays is occupied by resorts, restaurants, bars, stores and diving centers. This area is especially attractive for those seeking entertainment, beach parties and nightlife.

The smaller Koh Phi Phi Leh, on the other hand, became famous in 2000, when it served as the set for the movie "The beach." Today it has become a pristine National Marine Park; Maya Beach, one of the symbols of the Thai seaside, considered by many to be the aesthetically perfect beach, and Lagoon Bay, a truly magical green-water lagoon created by the erosion of the limestone cliffs above it, face here. It is recommended to arrive on this island in the afternoon and spend the night in the roadstead to enjoy the island in all its tranquility.

The Phi Phi Islands are pure magic, a true natural paradise!

Golfo del Siam

Golfo del Siam

Within the Gulf of Siam, which also touches Malaysia, Cambodia and Vietnam, two archipelagos that are interesting for sailing vacations stand out.

The Koh Chang archipelago in the northeastern part includes naturally beautiful islands. Koh Chang is Thailand's second largest island, very green and wild; Koh Maak is home to breathtaking sandy beaches; Koh Kut with a hilly landscape covered with lush forests; Koh Wai famous for rocky beaches and nearby coral reefs.

The Koh Samui archipelago, on the other hand, located in the western part, an area that is now very active from a tourist point of view. The best known island is precisely the one that gives the archipelago its name; until the 1970s it had nothing but coconuts and rubber trees. Koh Phangan, was the beloved island of Thai kings. Today it is famous for the Full Moon Party, a dance music festival held monthly on Haad Rin Nok Beach in honor of the full moon. While sailing you can also reach Koh Ang Thong, a marine park with 42 islets.

7 islands not to be missed

  • Koh Tao, the crystal clear island

Very small island where tourism is especially concentrated in the western part. Its name means turtle island because of the presence, until a few years ago, of sea turtles who used it to lay their eggs.

  • Koh Tapu (James Bond Island), the island of adventures

A must-see for lovers of movie locations and nature. Right here, the movie "The Man with the Golden Gun" was filmed, boosting interest in the island itself and its many wonders. A very small strip of land on which to relax while enjoying the crystal clear beauty of the sea.

  • Koh Kood, the island of discovery

Far from the hustle and bustle, not very busy and therefore perfect for those who want to unplug and recharge their batteries. Between sea, sun and the many water sports you can try in this tropical paradise.

  • Koh Lipe, the lucky island

If you crave tranquility, the island for you is undoubtedly Koh Lipe. Here, you can experience magical moments of relaxation and discover the many varieties of tropical fish on its seabed.  The island is home to about 25 percent of the world's tropical marine life.

  • Koh Samet, the nature island

It is among the most popular Thai islands. Its name comes from the wood used to build fishing boats, samed, which is typical of the place. A land of unique natural beauty that will offer you the opportunity to experience an evocative vacation.

  • Koh Chang, the island of elephants

The name comes from its peculiar shape that resembles precisely the body of an elephant lying down. An island that keeps its original peculiarities intact, between white beaches where you can indulge in pleasant moments of peace and hidden corners of pure beauty and still unexplored.

  • Koh Phangan, the island of relaxation and well-being

It is one of the most famous and fascinating. Visitable year-round due to its consistently warm climate, it is a paradise land where you can enjoy the beauty of the sea and picturesque beaches.
