This experience, in a nutshell

Navigating the Bay of Biscay and English Channel

This stage combines coastal navigation with open sea passages, taking us from the rugged shores of Galicia through the challenging Bay of Biscay to huge tides of Brittany and into the bustling maritime world of the English Channel.

Start/Finish Cities and Airports:

🇪🇸 A Coruña [LCG], Santiago de Compostela [SCQ]

🇳🇱Amsterdam Schiphol [AMS]

Approximate
step by step route:

  • A Coruña → Brest, 380 nm
  • Brest → Roscoff, 80 nm
  • Roscoff → Cherbourg, 110 nm
  • Cherbourg → Fecamp, 80 nm
  • Fecamp → Boulogne-sur-Mer, 90 nm
  • Boulogne-sur-Mer → Nieuwpoort, 60 nm
  • Nieuwpoort → Scheveningen, 90 nm
  • Scheveningen → Amsterdam, 40 nm

Difficulty 4 out of 5

This means preparation for challenging conditions is essential. We may encounter strong winds, big waves, and potentially rather low temperatures. The stage includes long offshore passages that could last several days.

The Bay of Biscay is known for its unpredictable weather, while the English Channel presents its own challenges with at times harsh winds and strong tidal currents. However, May usually offers much milder conditions compared to winter months.

ROUTE
HIGHLIGHTS

  • Bay of Biscay

A challenging stretch of water known for its testing conditions and rich marine life. This passage offers true offshore sailing experience while requiring careful weather planning.

  • Brittany Coast

Historic lighthouses and charming fishing villages line the rugged shores. The region's dramatic tides, reaching up to 12 meters, shape both the landscape and maritime culture.

  • English Channel

One of the world's busiest shipping lanes requiring precise navigation. The ports from Cherbourg to Boulogne each represent different aspects of French maritime heritage.

  • Dutch Waters

A complex network of waterways, channels, and locks leading to Amsterdam. Traditional windmills and polders create a distinct maritime landscape unique to the Netherlands.

EXPERIENCE DETAILS

  • Offshore Navigation

Extended periods at sea develop essential bluewater sailing skills. The Bay of Biscay crossing provides experience in weather routing and passage planning while offering opportunities to observe oceanic wildlife.

  • Tidal Navigation

Working with some of Europe's largest tidal ranges requires careful timing and planning. Each port entry teaches different aspects of tidal navigation while testing boat handling skills.

  • Traffic Management

The English Channel provides intensive practice in commercial shipping navigation. We learn to work with traffic separation schemes, AIS, and radio communication while maintaining proper watch systems.

  • Coastal Variety

The journey connects three distinct European maritime traditions. From French fishing ports to Dutch canals, each region presents unique navigational challenges and cultural experiences.
