Maddalena Archipelago (Sardinia) by sailboat

Guide to the most beautiful places, bays and beaches in the Maddalena Archipelago

The island of Budelli, Caprera and Spargi are just some of the best destinations for a sailing or catamaran vacation in Sardinia

The Maddalena Archipelago is located north of Sardinia and the Gallura coast and consists of 62 islands, islets and windswept granite rocks. The main islands are La Maddalena, Caprera, Budelli, Spargi, Razzoli and Santa Maria. Located at the eastern end of the Strait of Bonifacio, and a convenient embarkation point for reaching Corsica, the archipelago is famous for its beautiful beaches, natural landings and Mediterranean scrub, the color of which changes according to the sunlight. The archipelago is wild and of enormous naturalistic value. It was declared a National Park in 1994 and a geomarine protected area with the aim of safeguarding one of the most beautiful seas in the world.

In the Archipelago there is the possibility of staying moored in roadsteads and organizing excursions to lonely beaches and coves. With its constant winds, thanks to the nearby Straits of Bonifacio, this area is perfect for sailing. With no long crossings against the wind or too rough seas and plenty of sheltering to take shelter in, you can enjoy all the beauty of a sailing vacation! The archipelago of can also be visited with daily experiences, touching only some of the main stops, or, to enjoy the sea more calmly, weekly vacations are ideal.

The best time of year

The best months for good weather in the archipelago are from late April to mid-October. On average, the hottest and definitely busiest months are July and August. If you are looking for a quieter vacation and want to enjoy the islands in solitude, opt for the low-to-mid season months: May, June and September, October.

Where to go and what to see by boat in the Maddalena archipelago

La Maddalena: not only beaches

La Maddalena: not only beaches

Despite its 20 square kilometers, La Maddalena is ready to surprise you. Not only with beaches that have nothing to envy the Caribbean, but also thanks to picturesque buildings and traces of history and folklore. The island is also perfect for sports or simple walks among the greenery. The historic center is a little gem, made up of alleys, stairways, traditional small stores and architectural buildings that stand out because of the colors and narrow balconies that make them resemble the typical houses of the Ligurian Riviera.

The island's commercial port is a real gem that will give you wonderful views. Here you can breathe good air and see fishermen returning on their boats. All around, like a frame, you can admire the town's oldest buildings, which date back to the 1700s. You can't help but indulge in an evening ashore and get lost among the small squares and "corrugi" (little alleys), perhaps trying the typical cuisine from culurgiones to seadas.

The second peculiarity concerns a musical and almost unintelligible version of the local dialect, like a kind of cantilena, which has managed to be preserved intact over time.

The island of Caprera, Garibaldi's residence

The island of Caprera, Garibaldi's residence

The island of Caprera is so beautiful that Garibaldi, the hero of two worlds, chose it as his home for his last years. The island has not changed much in a hundred plus years: beautiful, wild and lush surrounded by a crystal clear sea. In addition to Garibaldi's museum, which is worth a visit, the island is lined with numerous bays and inlets. One of the most famous is Cala Portese, also called "beach of the two seas," a strip of land surrounded by sea on both sides. Also enchanting is Cala Andreani, with its very clear sand. Renowned is the beach of the Wreck, named for the presence of an old coal ship: an extraordinary bay with emerald waters and white sand. Also worth a stop are Cala Napoletana, Punta Galera, Cala Brigantina, Cala Coticcio and the beautiful Cala Serena. Caprera is also home to the headquarters of a very famous sailing center, near Cala Garibaldi.

Caprera Island is not only sea. Trekking enthusiasts will find for their trips ashore easily passable paths to discover the wonders of the interior, such as Poggio Stefano, made of pink granite, Mount Teialone and the old military village of Stagnali, from which there are breathtaking views.

The Island of Budelli and its Pink Beach: a natural wonder

The Island of Budelli and its Pink Beach: a natural wonder

The island is known to the world as one of the most beautiful islands in the entire Mediterranean and is highly prized for its romantic Pink Beach. Its very special name comes from the characteristic color of the sand rich in tiny fragments of coral, granite, shells and mollusk shells. The spectacular coloration comes from a pink microorganism that inhabits posidonia meadows and lives inside the shells. When it dies, the shells are washed ashore, breaking up by the action of water and wind. It takes years and years for it to turn into such a thin material that it goes to settle on the beach giving it the beautiful pink color. Over time anchorages and irregular sea agitation have set back the posidonia and changed the sandy composition. Starting in 1998, the introduction of a strict protection regime, whereby the beach was closed to bathing, landing and anchoring of boats, allowed it to fully regain its coloring.

In addition to its beach, Budelli is known for being one of the last wild glades still intact today. The depths of its crystal clear waters are home to extremely rare species of crustaceans, fish and other sea creatures.

Practical info

Territory

The Maddalena Archipelago is a group of islands northeast of Sardinia. There are 62 of them, including islands and islets. Both the marine and land area, are included within a national park of the same name.

Population centers

Among the many islands that make up the archipelago, the only inhabited ones are La Maddalena and Caprera.

Getting there

The best way to reach the archipelago is to arrive in Olbia by plane or ship. Connections operate year-round, intensified in the summer period. Most boat vacations involve boarding from Olbia and neighboring ports, or further north such as Cannigione, Santa Teresa di Gallura, Palau. From Olbia you will find public and private transfers that will take you to the port of embarkation.

Getting around

Once you reach La Maddalena, you can move by car between this island and Caprera, which is connected by a viaduct. To explore the other islands you must opt for a boat or catamaran

Ports and marinas

Within the Maddalena Park, both boat access and mooring and anchoring are allowed only in certain areas with special permission. There are few harbors; the main marinas are on La Maddalena Island, such as Marina del Ponte and Cala Gavetta

Activities

The Maddalena Archipelago offers many possibilities for sea and snorkeling enthusiasts. The turquoise waters and rich seabed are a world waiting to be discovered. Diving and spearfishing are allowed only in certain areas. On the island of Caprera you can try your hand at scenic trekking and horseback riding. On the island of La Maddalena you can walk the Vineyard Trail, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sea and beaches

With crystal-clear waters and pristine beaches, the Maddalena archipelago has nothing to envy the Caribbean islands. Among the many beaches not to be missed, the most famous ones are Cala Coticcio in Caprera, Cala Corsara in the island of Spargi and the renowned Spiaggia Rosa in Budelli.

The 10 beaches not to be missed during a sailing vacation in the Maddalena Archipelago

  • Porto della Madonna

It is not a beach but real pools of crystal clear green water. It forms between the islands of Santa Maria, Budelli and Razzoli.

  • Cala Santa Maria, Santa Maria Island

The most beautiful and renowned beach on the island with more than 200 meters of fine white sand. Popular destination for many boats in the summertime.

  • Cala Lunga, island of Razzoli

Composed of white sand and surrounded by Mediterranean scrub and granite rocks.

  • Cala Corsara, island of Spargi

Turquoise colors, shades of blue and unique charm of unspoiled nature. Impossible not to snorkel.

  • Cala dell'Amore, island of Spargi

Fine white sand with an outline of reddish rocks that plunge into the crystal-clear waters. The seabed is shallow and sandy, ideal and safe even for children.

  • Cala Soraya, Spargi Island

Shaped like a boomerang, it is located on the eastern side of Spargi, has fine white sand and is also accessible only by sea.

  • Cala Coticcio, island of Caprera

Nicknamed the Tahiti of the island. Given the clarity of the water and the lightness of the grains of sand, you will feel like you are really in Polynesia.

  • Beach of the Wreck, island of Caprera

Characteristic beach named after the presence on the shore of a skeleton of an ancient ship that carried coal.

  • Punta Tegge, La Maddalena Island

Characterized by a unique, almost lunar setting. The stretch of beach here is very fine, but as you go further in, an almost 180-degree valley of granite rock opens up.

  • Lower Trinita, La Maddalena Island

Another jewel of nature composed of three connected coves. To describe its beauty is impossible, you have to go there and admire the contrast of the crystal clear sea with the dense Mediterranean vegetation.
