Corfu by sailboat

Guide to the most beautiful places, bays and beaches of Corfu

Like a genie in a lamp, you can ask for everything from Corfu: long beaches, picturesque headlands, trekking and diving, culture and music late into the night.

Corfu is the northernmost Greek island in the Ionian Sea and closest to the Italian coast, just a few miles from the mainland of Albania and Greece. Second in size only to Kefalonia, Kerkyra, as the Greeks call it, offers in one place diverse environments: wide, ochre-colored sandy bays nestled between high headlands and a fertile, verdant hinterland; ancient fortifications built to counter the Ottomans' expansion into the West; and the Ipsos waterfront with its array of taverns, pubs and disco bars for long nights by the sea.

Circumnavigating the island by sailboat, you will experience the western side in the open sea, windier and with deep cobalt blue waters, and then enjoy the eastern side that offers safe harbors and sheltered bays, considered among the most beautiful in all of Greece.

The best time of year

Corfu is pleasant for several months of the year, but from June to September the sea temperature and weather are ideal for a summer sailing vacation, including sailings thanks to the Meltemi.

What to see and do in Corfu

The city of Corfu

The city of Corfu

Corfu has gone from one domination to another because of its very favorable location in the Mediterranean Sea, including Roman, Venetian, French, and British. Today the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves fortresses, palaces, and museums (the one of Asian art is not to be missed) that testify to the island's multicultural past and give it a relaxed and cosmopolitan urban atmosphere, as only some seaside towns manage to have. The Spianada, which separates the old Venetian fortress from the rest of the old town, is Europe's second-largest square; the Liston is a spectacular arcade that rises beneath the elegant French-era buildings; and not far away stands the charming Church of St. Spyridon, while the iconic Vlacherna Monastery, on the small islet of Pontikonissi, is just outside the city. Of course, there is no shortage of stores, clubs and a packed summer calendar of cultural events.

To the north of the island under full sail

Cape Drastis is a wild and enchanting place, with its high white cliffs entering the blue sea and beaches that can be reached almost exclusively by boat.

A little further south, Agios Stefanos is a small, quiet and not too busy port, perfect for enjoying a chill-out evening and a starting point for exploring the sparsely populated and spartan Diapontie Islands by sailboat, perfect for enjoying a simple and intense vacation. In Othonoi, the most beautiful beach that can only be reached by sea is Aspri Ammos, near Calypso Cave, while in Erikoussa the wild cove of Navagio with its wreck is not to be missed.

Corfu with the family

Corfu with the family

Convenient to reach and equipped to welcome tourists, with several towns scattered across the island and wide sandy beaches such as those at Glyfada and Agios Giorgios, Corfu is a great destination for one of the first family vacations abroad. Children will have a chance to discover a new culture and have fun, whether sailing or on land: the Aqualand Corfu Water Park and the Achilleion Palace, once the summer residence of Empress Sissi, are a must! Many beaches on the island also have all the amenities that are useful when traveling with children.

Practical info

Territory

The island of Corfu, in the Ionian Sea, has an area of 590 square kilometers. It is the most densely inhabited island in Greece, thanks to tourism and agriculture: olive groves as far as the eye can see but also vineyards and wineries where you can buy local wine.

Population centers

The capital city is Corfu, other important towns are Nissaki, Kalami, Kassopi and Lefkimmi. There are several villages dotting the entire island.

How to Get There

Corfu Town can be reached by direct flights to Ioannis Kapodistrias Airport.

Getting around

Once on the island, you can rely on buses that connect the main tourist locations. Alternatively, you can use cabs or rent a scooter.

Ports and marinas

The two main ports are located in Corfu Town and Lefkimmi, both on the eastern side of the island, toward the mainland. There are then several other marinas along the coasts, including the delightful marina of Kassiopi and the port of Palaiokastritsa.

Activities

Corfu offers many possibilities for sportsmen. Scuba diving enthusiasts will find several diving centers: the best sites are on the west coast, in the area of Paleokastritsa, characterized by the presence of caves, small wrecks and many species of fish. The western side of the island is also a paradise for windsurfers and kitesurfers, while trekkers will find trails for all tastes and levels of difficulty throughout the island.

Sea and beaches

With crystal-clear waters and magnificent mountain views, Corfu's beaches are both sandy and pebbly, awarded Blue Flag status in part because of the services offered.

Among the many not to be missed, in the south of the island the endless tongue of beach from Issos to Halikounas, in the north Kerasia and Canal d'Amour with its fascinating cave, and in the center Paleokastritsa and Stelari.
