Whale watching sailing cruises  with WWF

Guide to WWF sailing cruises project "Le Vele del Panda"

A close-to-nature sailing cruise that integrates unrepeatable emotions and new scientific knowledge, perfect for true lovers of the sea, ready to have fun, wonder and delve into the magical world of cetaceans.

The Mediterranean Sea is home to about 10 percent of all known animal species: the WWF is at the forefront of protecting this precious biodiversity and for the past few years has been organising with Sailsquare “Le Vele del Panda”, cruises that integrate cetacean research and monitoring activities with the pure pleasure of a sailing vacation suitable for everyone.

Sighting areas, such as the Pelagos Sanctuary in the north and some of southern Italy's most beautiful islands such as the Pontine Islands, Lampedusa and Pantelleria, are among the destinations with the cleanest and most inviting seas. The mood onboard is friendly and informal, and WWF researchers will involve you in scientific activities, making every encounter with dolphins and minke whales even more magical!

GenerAzione Sea

GenerAzione Sea

“Le Vele del Panda” is a project part of the larger campaign called GenerAzione Mare by WWF. The main goal of this campaign is to restore the balance of the Mediterranean Sea, a sea that is under unprecedented pressure from overfishing, accumulation of microplastics, and unsustainable economic development.

One of the most urgent challenges is to reverse the trend of biodiversity loss in the Mediterranean. This can be done through several strategies, including defending and restoring the natural habitats of certain marine species.

To achieve this goal, it is essential to spread awareness about the threats to native Mediterranean species. In addition, it is crucial to incentivize positive actions through innovative projects and partnerships.

In summary, “Le Vele del Panda” is an important part of WWF's GenerAzioneMare campaign, which is committed to preserving the Mediterranean Sea's precious and fragile ecosystem through education, protecting marine habitats and promoting sustainable actions.

Ecotourism and Responsible Tourism

Ecotourism and Responsible Tourism

Participating in a Whale Watching experience represents first and foremost a commitment to environmental protection. WWF promotes an approach to tourism that places respect for the surrounding nature at the center. Aboard our boats, we encourage mindful and respectful behaviour toward the marine ecosystem.

In addition, WWF is one of the founding members of the Italian Association of Responsible Tourism (AITR). This association is actively engaged in the protection of the natural environment and local cultures through the orientation of tourism towards sustainable economic processes. The goal is to create a positive synergy between tourism and the environment by encouraging virtuous practices that promote the well-being of local communities and the conservation of natural resources.

WWF researchers

WWF researchers

WWF researchers are young enthusiasts who have dedicated their years of study to deepening their knowledge of the sea and its creatures. These boys and girls have degrees in disciplines such as BiologyEthology or Natural Sciences, and later completed their training as Whale Watching guides under the auspices of WWF.

These researchers bring with them not only their professional equipment, but also a great passion to share their knowledge about marine species, their behaviors and habits. Their mission is to teach how to observe, identify and protect cetaceans from the threats they face daily, such as fishing and boat traffic.

In short, WWF researchers are passionate experts ready to guide you through the fascinating world of sea creatures, offering a unique perspective to help protect them.

Marine species

Marine species

On our WWF cruises, you have the opportunity to spot a variety of fascinating marine species. These encounters include minke whales, dolphins, sperm whales, zephyrs, sea turtles, and sharks

In addition, data collected during the excursions are shared with research institutions and universities. These data are crucial for the development of research theses and marine conservation projects.

By participating in cruises aboard “Le Vele del Panda”, you will become a concrete player in scientific research and the preservation of our precious planet. It is a unique opportunity to experience Citizen Science in action.

Joining WWF also means making an important contribution to the knowledge and conservation of our extraordinary marine world.
